Understand Anti-Black Racism in the Canadian Context
Anti-Black racism has a long and distinct history in Canada, and its effects continue to shape experiences within Canadian institutions and communities today.
Anti-Black Racism in Canada is a free, reflection-based online course created for adult learners who want to deepen their understanding of anti-Black racism, recognize systemic patterns, and consider meaningful ways to respond.
The course brings together Canadian research, policy frameworks, historical context, and community knowledge in an accessible learning experience. Rather than focusing on tests or grades, the course encourages learning through reflection, real-world scenarios, practical examples, and action-based activities.
What You Will Explore
Across four modules, you will explore:
- Understanding Anti-Black Racism in Canada: Learn key definitions, examine the history of slavery and segregation in Canada, and understand the distinct systemic features of anti-Black racism.
- How Anti-Black Racism Shows Up Today: Explore patterns within policing, criminal justice, education, employment, health care, and other Canadian institutions.
- Why Anti-Black Racism Is Often Denied or Minimized: Recognize common patterns of denial, defensiveness, stereotypes, and bias while developing more productive ways to communicate about racism.
- What You Can Do: Explore allyship, advocacy, accountability, everyday actions, and practical ways to contribute to systemic change.
Learn Through Reflection, Not Testing
This is not a traditional academic course. There are no quizzes, grades, or scoring.
Instead, you will work through real-world scenarios, reflection questions, historical examples, Canadian research, and practical activities designed to help you connect what you are learning with everyday life.
Each module takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.
A Trauma-Informed Learning Experience
Conversations about racism can involve difficult histories, experiences, and emotions. This course uses a trauma-informed approach that encourages reflection without requiring personal disclosure.
Reflection prompts are private and optional. You can engage with the material in a way that respects your own experiences, boundaries, and learning process.
Grounded in Canadian Sources
The course focuses specifically on anti-Black racism within Canada. Content draws on Canadian research, government frameworks, human rights organizations, historical sources, advocacy organizations, and community knowledge.
Sources are cited using APA 7th edition formatting so learners can continue exploring the research and organizations referenced throughout the course.
Move From Awareness to Action
Understanding anti-Black racism is an important beginning, but awareness alone does not create change.
The final module helps you consider what meaningful action can look like in your own life, workplace, organization, and community. You will explore practical approaches to allyship, advocacy, accountability, and systemic change while developing a personal action plan.
Learn. Reflect. Act. Change.
Begin the course and deepen your understanding of anti-Black racism in Canada.
